To Fuu, My Dear
Last November a new member came to my house. Let me introduce her to you. Her name is Fuu. Nobody is sure how old she is. We think eleven months perhaps. She likes drinking hot water even on hot days and she loves to be held. She is no cute but she is also a naughty girl. She bites our legs while we walk. It hurts!! She sometimes steals my slippers so I have to look for them.
Now I’m sure you can guess what she is. Yes, she is a dog. She was a street dog once. I don’t know where or how she was abandoned. But KEDAMA-NO-KAI saved her. I first learned about KEDAMA surfing the Internet. It’s a volunteer group that saves dogs and cats separated from their owners. They also look for foster parents. I fell in love with Fuu as soon as I found her on the KEDAMA website. I went to a meeting they held to find new owners for abandoned pets. Fuu was there!!
Ms. Hashimoto, a member of KEDAMA, said to me “I hope she will live a happy life from now on. Please love her.” I felt Ms. Hashimoto pitied Fuu because the former owner abandoned her and she lived a hard life. That’s when I decided to take care of her.
Ms. Hashimoto had a good reason. To begin this type of volunteer work. She is a housewife living in Shunan City. One day she met a dog in a park. The dog’s back legs were coiled with two, one meter-long wires. The wires bit into the dog’s muscle and pulled its Achilles’ tendons. Its bones were bare. She carried it to the vet and after 2 operations the dog was able to walk slowly. It took two months. Then the dog became a member of Ms. Hashimoto’s family. Ms. Hashimoto thought, “If I do nothing, the number of miserable animal deaths will only increase.” She told her friends and they started the volunteer group KEDAMA. You should search the KEDAMA website. You can see cute dogs and cats that are waiting for new owners.
After living with Fuu, I came to believe dogs can understand human feelings. When I get depressed or cry, Fuu comes to me and licks my face. It makes me feel better. Sadness gradually fades away and warm and soft feelings arise in my mind. I’m appreciative Fuu is in my family. Fuu really changed my family. My elder brother and I used to go to our rooms shortly after dinner and not to talk very much. But now we go to Fuu and play with her. My father comes home from work and says, “I’m home! Fuu-chan, I’m home!” and holds her as soon as he enters the house. He never scolds Fuu no matter what she dogs. I was astonished when he bought special glasses. He wears them he holds Fuu and she licks his face.
I think about pets abandoned by their owners. Most of them are to be killed. But there are people like the numbers of KEDAMA who help those animals. I want to thank them for saving Fuu. I swear I will love Fuu and take care of her forever.

昨年の１１月、我が家に新しい家族が増えました。
彼女のことをみなさんに紹介させてください。彼女の名前は｢ふう｣。彼女がいくつかは誰にもわかりません。
たぶん１１ヶ月くらいだと思います。暑い日でもお湯を飲むのが好きで、抱っこされるのが大好き。
彼女はとてもかわいいのですが、いたずらっこでもあります。
散歩の時には私たちの足をかみます。痛いです。時々私のスリッパを盗むので、私は探さないといけません。
さて、みなさんにはふうが何だかもうおわかりですね。そうふうは犬です。
彼女はかつて捨て犬でした。どこでどのように捨てられていたのかは私にはわかりません。
しかしケダマの会が彼女を助けたのです。私はインターネットで初めてケダマの会を知りました。
それは飼い主を失った犬や猫を助け、新しい里親を捜すボランティア団体です。
私はケダマの会のウェブサイトでふうを見たとたん彼女のことが気に入りました。
私は捨てられたペットの新しい里親を捜すために開く会に行きました。ふうはそこにいました！！
会のメンバーの橋本さんが私に言われました。
｢これからこの子が幸せな生活を送れるといいなと思います。どうか、かわいがってね。｣
もとの飼い主に捨てられ、つらい生活を送っていたふうを不憫に思う橋本さんの気持ちが伝わってきました。
私は、その時、ふうを育てようと決心しました。
橋本さんにはこのボランティアを始めた理由があります。
彼女は周南市に住む主婦です。ある日彼女は公園で一匹の犬に出会いました。
その犬は後ろの両脚に約１ｍのワイヤ2本をまきつけられていたのです。
ワイヤはその犬の肉に食い込みアキレス腱を切っていました。骨はむき出しです。
彼女はその犬を動物病院に運びました。2度の手術を経て、ゆっくりあるけるようになりました。
約2ヶ月かかりました。そしてその犬は彼女の家族の一員となりました。
橋本さんは思いました、｢何かしなければ惨めな動物の死はどんどん増えていくだけだ。｣
仲間に相談し、ボランティアグループ、ケダマの会をたちあげました。

ふうと生活してみて、犬は人の気持ちがわかるのではないかと思うようになりました。
私が泣いたり、落ち込んだりしているとき、そばに寄り添って顔をなめてきます。
それで私は少し気分がよくなります。悲しみがだんだん薄らいで、
私の中にあたたかくてやわらかい気持ちがうまれてきます。
ふうが我が家にいてくれて本当によかったと思います。ふうが来て我が家は本当に変わりました。
以前は夕飯の後すぐに私と兄は自分たちの部屋に行ってあまり会話をしませんでした。
でも今ではふうのところに行って彼女と遊ぶようになりました。
私の父は仕事から帰ってくると、「ただいま、ふうちゃーん、ただいま。｣と言い、
家に入るとすぐに抱っこします。ふうちゃんに何をされようとおこりません。
ふう専用のめがねを買ってきた時には、唖然としてしまいました。
ふうを抱くときにはそれをかけて、顔をなめさせています。
私は飼い主に捨てられるペットについて考えます。そのほとんどは殺される運命にあります。
しかしケダマの会のメンバーのようにそれらの動物を助ける人たちもいます。
私はふうを救ってくれて彼女たちに感謝したいです。
私はふうを可愛がって、ずっと大切に育てると誓います。
